Blom-Singer Surgical Voice Restoration

Most people who undergo a laryngectomy find the loss of the ability to speak devastating. In 1978, Doctors Singer and Blom pioneered the methods of tracheoesophageal puncture and valved silicone voice prostheses that for over 30 years have become the international standard for voice restoration, allowing thousands of patients worldwide to regain their ability to speak.

Most laryngectomees find that the use of a device like the
Blom-Singer® Voice Prosthesis is the best option to give them a good voice again. Surgical Voice Restoration (SVR) involves surgery to create a channel between the airway and the oesophagus, which is maintained by a one-way valved stent - the Blom-Singer® Voice Prosthesis.

The speciality of SVR has seen many advancements in recent years and an even wider range of Blom-Singer® Voice Prostheses now exist, in both 16 & 20 French gauge diameters, to address the majority of clinical situations.

Styles:

Exdwelling (Patient Changeable) – prostheses that patients may insert remove and clean; these include:

Blom-Singer® Duckbill
: the Duckbill is a patient – changeable, one – way slit valve prosthesis, available in 16Fr diameter & with lengths ranging from 6mm to 28mm.

Blom-Singer® Low Pressure: the Low Pressure is a patient – changeable, one-way flapper valve prosthesis, available in both 16 & 20Fr diameters & from 6mm to 28mm lengths.

Also available:

Blom-Singer® Duckbill and Low Pressure Voice Prosthesis Special Order Options, including special lengths, long strap & Increased Resistance options for patients who have specific needs.

Indwelling (Clinician Placed) – prostheses designed specifically for laryngectomees who are unable or reluctant to perform the routine removal and insertion necessary for the cleaning and maintenance of patient-changeable voice prostheses; these include:

  • Blom-Singer® Classic™ Indwelling Voice Prosthesis: a non-sterile prosthesis designed with increased oesophageal and tracheal flanges for maximum retention and incorporates a radiopaque ring for visualisation under x-ray. Available in 16 & 20Fr diameters and 4mm to 22mm lengths.

  • NEW Blom-Singer® Classic™Indwelling Voice Prosthesis – Sterile Series: Designed for primary placement procedures; available in both 16 & 20Fr diameters and from 8mm to 14mm lengths.

  • Blom-Singer® Advantage® Indwelling Voice Prosthesis: The first prosthesis ever to incorporate a valve imbedded with silver oxide. This feature may eliminate or reduce the need for anti-fungal agents such as Nystatin for some users, but not for others. Available in both 16 & 20Fr diameters and from 4mm to 22mm lengths.

  • NEW Blom-Singer® Dual Valve™ Indwelling Voice Prosthesis: Introducing the first ever dual-valve prosthesis. Should the primary speech valve fail due to Candida (yeast) colonisation, the secondary speech valve is intended to remain viable to help prevent leakage of fluids. Available in 20Fr diameter and from 6mm to 14mm.

Also now available:

NEW Blom-Singer® Rapid Response Special Order Voice Prosthesis Service: People are different, and a standard voice prosthesis may not be right for everyone. That’s why we’ve introduced the new Rapid Response Special Order Voice Prosthesis Service. Now you can order from a wide range of specially designed Indwelling (Clinician Placed) products, including:

  • Special Length: available in 1mm incremental lengths for comfort and a more precise TO puncture fit.

  • Large Oesophageal Flange: provides a ‘seal’ to help manage leakage around a voice prosthesis. Also, enables a safe and convenient downsizing from a wider diameter prosthesis to a smaller diameter. Effectiveness is dependent on an optimal prosthesis length fit that achieves a snug flange-to-flange seal against the wall surface(s).

  • Large Oesophageal and Tracheal Flanges: provides a ‘double seal’ in patients with significantly enlarged puncture tracts and ‘tear-drop’ or irregularly shaped punctures. Effectiveness is dependent on an optimal prosthesis length fit that achieves a snug flange-to-flange seal against the wall surface(s).

  • Increased Resistance: a voice prosthesis with a valve that opens less easily. Designed to be used in patients in whom conventional voice prostheses open intermittently with fluctuations in oesophageal pressures resulting in air ingestion and/or leakage.

  • TOP Occluder: a voice prosthesis with its valve permanently sealed closed.
